All classes end the week of June 11, 2011
Depending on their age and interests, each child should take something different. For young children just starting out in dance, we only offer ballet and jazz class as a starting point for their dance training. This will teach them the basics of dance and help with coordination and movement. If your child is older, ask them what they would like to try. Descriptions of each of the dance styles can be found in our programs section.
Ballet – slow and methodical
Jazz – technical but faster than ballet
Tap – allows you to express yourself through sound
Hip Hop – very high energy and not as structured as Ballet, Jazz or Highland
Highland – involves immense strength, technique and stamina for someone interested in a challenge
Ballroom and Latin - a mix of many different styles and best of all you get to do it with a partner
Acro – requires strength, flexibility, a desire to tumble, flip and jump around, it also requires a NO FEAR attitude.
If you are unsure about what to do, come on in to the studio and try all the different dance styles you want absolutely free!! Pick one style when you have decided what you would like to do.
Again, depending on what your child is doing, dance classes can range in price. If you are looking to take 1 recreational dance class for the year, you are looking at paying $360 for the year for 30 weeks of lessons, $75-$100 for the costume, $25-$30 for pictures, $10-$15 per ticket for the recital and $25-$100 for dance shoes. If your child wishes to participate in more classes, there is more of a cost. If your child wishes to take competitive dancing, there is more of a cost. Check our programs section for more details on pricing.
If your child is taking one style of dance they will be attending class once per week at a designated time. The only other times they are required to be available outside of their designated dance day is for picture day, dress rehearsal and recital. If your child is involved with competitive dancing, they are required at the studio 2-3 times per week and then outside of their classes they are required at picture day, competitions (2-3 per year in different locations in Ontario), dress rehearsal and recital. The dance studio is closed for long weekends and during the Christmas and March break periods, so dancers will not be required to dance at those times. Check our program section for more details.
Most levels are broken down by age. Check our Dance Programs section for information on levels. If your child is a beginner but in an older age group, he/she should try 2 different levels to see which will work out better. If you are unsure, speak to the director or a teacher to help guide you. They can assess your child in multiple levels and then decide which one would be better for them. Check our program section for more details.
Encouraging a child to stick with a program to the end is a good idea, but not always practical If your child decides that they would not like to continue with lessons for whatever reason, you will be reimbursed for the amount of lessons remaining. If there is a costume that has been ordered, you will be required to pay for it in full but you will get to keep it.
Because kids are learning, having parents or friends in class is a distraction. Parents are not permitted in class. Once a year in January/February Hype Danz holds an open house. Parents, family and friends are welcome to observe the entire class and take photos/videos of their child. Teachers may decide to allow parents to view the class progress occasionally by allowing parents the opportunity to watch the last 5 minutes of the lesson, but it is at the discretion of the instructor.
Missed classes on the part of the child are not made up or reimbursed. If the dance studio cancels a class due to inclement weather or for any other reason, the class will be made up at an alternate time.
There is not a formal dress code. Children are asked to wear “moveable” dance wear that allows minimal distraction to themselves and allows the teacher to see body lines. Outfits should not pose a hazard to a child, peers or teachers. Jeans and baggy clothing are not permitted in dance class. Ballet students are encouraged to wear a bodysuit, tights and skirt. Acro students are encouraged to wear a bodysuit or unitard with or without shorts on top. Highland students are encouraged to wear shorts with knee high socks. Jewelery and distracting accessories should be avoided. There is no color preference for any dance wear. Hype Danz wear is available for purchase.
